Finding English-Speaking Addiction Treatment in Quebec

You are ready to get help. You start calling recovery centres across Quebec, and every intake conversation happens in French. For an Anglophone already carrying shame, fear, and exhaustion, that gap becomes one more reason to put it off another week.

Language should not decide whether someone gets care. When you are working through trauma, cravings, or a mental health condition, you need to speak in the language you think and feel in. Many English-speaking people in Montreal and across Quebec spend weeks searching for full-service residential care delivered entirely in English, and they come up short.

Dunham House exists for those people. We are a registered Canadian charity offering English-language residential and outpatient programs for addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions on an 85-acre campus about 90 minutes from Montreal.

Why Language Matters in Recovery

Therapy asks you to say hard things out loud. In CBT and DBT sessions, you name the thought that feeds a craving, the memory behind a panic response, the belief that keeps you drinking. Doing that in a second language adds a layer of translation between what you feel and what you can express. That friction slows the work, and recovery is already hard enough.

Dual diagnosis raises the stakes further. Sorting out how anxiety, depression, or ADHD connects to substance use takes precise back-and-forth between you and your care team. A word chosen imperfectly can send a clinician down the wrong path. When you and your counsellor share a first language, that precision comes standard.

The same applies to the people beside you. Residential recovery runs on trust built with peers over shared meals, group sessions, and long evenings. That trust forms faster when nobody is straining to follow the conversation.

What English Care Looks Like in Quebec Right Now

The public system carries long wait times, and dedicated English-language residential beds are scarce. Families call CLSCs and hospitals and land on waitlists that stretch past the window when a person is ready to say yes to help.

Private centers fill some of that gap, though many charge fees that put them out of reach. Dunham House sits between those options. As a non-profit, we work with clients on private-pay and insurance-covered placements, and our admissions team walks families through what applies to their situation before anyone commits.

What to Expect at Dunham House

Dunham House

Every part of the program runs in English. Clinical sessions, group work, workshops, and the daily rhythm of the house all happen in the language you are most comfortable in. You never have to translate your recovery.

Our model treats substance use and mental health together rather than in sequence. McGill-affiliated psychiatrists and a secular, evidence-based approach ground the clinical side, drawing on CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care. No 12-step framing, no religious script, no one-size-fits-all formula.

The campus does part of the work on its own. Eighty-five acres of Eastern Townships countryside give residents room to breathe, and the Campbell Hendery Healing Garden runs an eight-week horticultural program developed with Root in Nature. It is a different kind of quiet than a clinic in the city.

Programs run 30 days, 90 days, and six months, so the length matches the person rather than a template. For those staying in Montreal, we offer a 12-week outpatient program at the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex.

Supporting an Anglophone Loved One

If you are the family member making calls, start by naming the language need on the first call. Ask directly whether clinical and daily programming happens in English, not just admissions. That one question saves weeks.

Recovery does not end at discharge, so ask about aftercare and family involvement early. Our Family Program helps you set boundaries, understand dual diagnosis, and plan for the transition home. If you or someone you love is in crisis right now, call or text 9-8-8, Canada's suicide and crisis line, available in English.

Talk to Someone Today

You do not have to choose between quality care and clear communication. Both belong in the same place.
